The Values Project - Sacramento, Napa, and Coming to a City Near You?
Overview
The Values Project is a public art project that connects communities by stenciling values words, like “Integrity”, "Tolerance" and "Compassion" in an unexpected place: in front of parking spaces in parking lots.
What Is "The Values Project"?
It is a public art project that paints values words like “Integrity”, "Kindness" and "Community" in public parking spaces in dozens of parking lots, and holds group workshops to determine core values. It is a low-cost, upbeat way to get people talking about positive values. For the project in Napa, we painted 500+ words in over 60 parking lots at 32 different business, church, non-profit and civic lots. In Sacramento I worked with an incredibly diverse community to hold 53 workshops with Businesses, schools, non-profits to choose over 60 values words that we painted in 21 different languages.
Why Values?
People have values, regardless of their culture, religion, age, language or race. We are seeing which values words pop-up again and again in the diverse neighborhoods of Sacramento.
How Does It Work?
We're coordinating with businesses, schools, hospitals, churches and non-profit organizations to host workshops where communities choose their values. We then arrange for licensed & bonded crews to paint select parking spaces with the values words. The Sacramento Arts Commission has approved the project for the City and it's endorsed by the SCUSD Superintendent, and four City Councilmembers.
What Does It Accomplish?
This is a chance for thousands of participants and hundreds of thousands of viewers to discover the values we all share - what unites us all. The novelty and surprise of seeing the words in parking spaces takes people by surprise and gets them thinking.
Who Pays For It?
We’re relying on a variety of funding: crowdsourcing, angels, grants and businesses. Businesses can get their words painted in their own lot and "sponsor" a the workshop and word painting at a non-profit, church or city lot for one small fee per word.
"The Values Project is an effective, high-profile, low-cost project that helps communities connect with their values." Peter Hassen, Artist
