The Values Project

Picture
Top-line
The Values Project is a public art project that stimulates dialogue and thought by stenciling basic human values, like “Integrity”, "Tolerance" and "Community" in an unexpected place: in front of parking spaces in parking lots.  For the project in Napa, 500+ words were panted in over 60 parking lots at 32 different businesses and agencies.

What
Values are an integral part of a person's character that transcend race, gender, nationality or creed.  I believe that positive values are essential to a cohesive and lasting culture and society and that our mutual identification with them can serve as a glue for our community.  By introducing simple words into the human landscape, I hope to provoke thought and spark dialogue about the idea of values.

Where
First we painted in a dozen City lots downtown.  Next, we include civic spaces, like schools, churches, non-profits and hospitals.  Finally, business parking lots are an ideal place to be surprised by non-commercial information.  Including all of these creates a feeling of unity in the social fabric of the community.

Why
People across America are gradually becoming disassociated from common cultural touch-stones.  As modern society tends to specialize our interests, we share fewer interests in common and our differences increase.  As social networking and media consumption become more finely segmented, there is clearly an “echo chamber” effect; we often only hear what we want to hear.  It is essential to remind ourselve just hat we all do share in common.

"The Values Project is effective a high-profile, low-cost project that brings the community together."      Peter Hassen, Artist
